What exactly does a website do during “routine system maintenance”?
Anyone with some system admin background know? This when they make backups, change encryption codes, check for fraudulent whatever…? I mean, some websites do it every week for a few hours…

Good question, but hard to answer. I write “web based software” for a living so this routine system maintenance is common.
Some of the typical things are;
1. updating the software. This generally requires the databases and software to be taken offline for a while to be done.
2. backups – sometimes, although not very often, backups need the system to be taken offline.
3. server reboots and maintenance – the server that a website runs on, just like your own computer, needs updates for security etc as well as physical maintenace to the hardware itself (like cleaning and so on).
Many websites schedule this routine maintenance so that they can reboot servers, reboot network components, update/repair/replace servers and components and a myriad of things. The “maintenance” being done this week may not be the same as what will be done during the designated time next week.
Yes – that sort of thing. It’s kind of like when you make a major change to your computer and you need to re-boot it. During that time no service is available.
Most of this stuff can be done as the service is running, but the solutions to give continuous access to a service as maintenance is applied are typically more expensive to provide, so it’s cheaper just to take things down for a few hours. Everyone (about) does this – even ebay and it must cost them millions to be unavailable. Offering a true 24×7 solution on every day is tricky.
